The following recipe from Christine Datian recently appeared
in The Armenian Mirror- Spectator newspaper (page 11). While not an Armenian dish, it is a
comforting soup perfect for any day of the week.

Reader Request: Choreg with a Cheese Topping?
Greetings,
Friends!
It’s been a
while since we’ve had a reader request, but one came in during my convalescence,
and I’m hoping you could help.
Here’s the
request from Steph:
“My mother and
grandmother would make I believe it was a choreg with a cheese topping - it
almost looked and tasted like what you would use for Bedek. (Perhaps Steph
means boreg?) Is that so? Can you help me out I'd

Cheese Beureks from 'Salpy's International Kitchen'
In my last post, a reader named Steph inquired about a
recipe her mother and grandmother used to make – a type of choreg, she thinks,
with a cheese topping. I asked for assistance in locating a recipe, but, sadly, no suggestions were offered.
As I scrolled through Face Book, I noticed that my
friend Salpy, who posts recipes regularly as ‘Salpy’s International Kitchen’ featured her Cheese

Armenia's cultural profile is rising along with its bread thanks to a new international partnership
Watching village women bake lavash
in a sunken tonir oven is a highlight of
everyone’s visit to Armenia—everyone except me, of course.
I was held hostage by a nasty head
cold during part of last year’s trip to the homeland, so Robyn trekked up a
mountainside without me to observe the ancient bread-making ritual.
I was sad
to have missed it but I would have been a lot sadder if she hadn’t

Crustless Zucchini Pie - Armenian Style! (aka Tutumov Boreg)
When my local farmer’s market advertised home-grown
zucchini for $.19 a lb. this past week, I thought it was a misprint.
Lo-and-behold, it was FACT! I rushed down and snatched-up a bunch, then thumbed
through my recipe file as soon as I got home.
With so many zucchini favorites, I couldn’t decide where to
start, so I chose a dish some Armenians I know call ‘Tutumov Boreg’.

Remembering our martyrs
Each April 24, Armenians around the world mourn the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide.
During last year's centennial, we were privileged to offer our prayers in Armenia as those martyrs were canonized as saints by the Armenian Church.
This year, as Armenians face new challenges, we pray for peace in their memory.
(For further thoughts on the Genocide and the challenges facing

Beef and Bean Enchiladas - A recipe from Alice Vartanian
Christine Datian has been a long-time recipe contributor to The Armenian Kitchen, the Armenian Mirror-Spectator, and numerous on-line
publications. This time Christine’s mother, Alice Vartanian’s recipe which
recently appeared in the Armenian Mirror-Spectator (page 14) is featured. Although it's not an
Armenian dish, her recipe would be perfect to prepare for Cinco de Mayo, which is right

Despite a few set-backs, I am on the slow road to recovery
The past two months have been very challenging for me.
First, knee replacement surgery; now, recovery from surgery due to a broken
ankle on the same leg! How could this be, you might wonder? Please don’t ask; it’s too painful to
discuss.
I have to say, my husband, Doug, has been my rock
throughout this entire ordeal. Without complaint, he’s jumped right in to take care of me, and, the entire

A Visit to Armenia
It’s been a little over a year since Doug and I took our
exhilarating, emotional trip to Yerevan, Armenia. We often relive memories of the
people we met, places we visited, and food we sampled (a big draw for me!). We
also discuss plans to (someday) return to see the things we didn’t
have time for on our first, brief visit.

Baked Mussels with Herbed Butter
I LOVE mussels!
Easy Midia Dolma
Midia dolma is my absolute favorite food,
but I also favor a steaming bowl of mussels in a buttery sauce that cries out
for crusty bread to soak-up the juices. Some folks share mussels as an appetizer;
I prefer to eat them as a main course – NO sharing!
One pet peeve I have, though, is being served mussels which
haven’t been de-bearded. That makes me

doesn’t require a lot of work, try these tasty morsels which combine freshly mashed

Final preparation can be done just before serving, or, a bit
in advance through step #4.

Honoring a family heritage with a very special wedding gift—shish kebab for years to come!
Robyn’s parents, Mary and Andy Dabbakian, flew down for a
visit soon after we moved to Florida in 1978. We spotted them at the airport
and ran to them with open arms.
Robyn got two big hugs, and I got two big suitcases.

There's nothing ratty about letting the world know you're Armenian
Some people don’t
believe in coincidences. I don’t believe in Armenian coincidences. We’re all
connected, especially on the Internet.
I was Googling
just recently for interesting shirts to wear on our summer sojourn when I came
across the cleverly named Ara The Rat line of Armenian-theme tees. They caught
my eye because they’re not quickie adaptations of generic ethnic slogans you can

Cucumber- Avocado- Yogurt Soup
About six years ago Christine Datian had her yummy Cucumber-Avocado-Yogurt Soup recipe published in the online edition of Sunset magazine. She asked if I
would post it here so you could ‘beat the heat’ of summer with this easy, no-cook dish.

A New Home for Dad's Shish Kebab Machine
Please forgive our delay in posting. Doug and I have been on our summer mission -driving from Florida to upstate NY in preparation of our daughter’s wedding next month – and – to deliver our family’s shish kebab machine to the future Mr. and Mrs.
After driving through 7 states, we finally settled into our summer rental at the base of Windham Mountain where bear-sightings are commonplace.

Our summer in the Catskill Mountains, to date, has been glorious and
relaxing – well, up to a point. Remember, there is a wedding taking place near the end
of August and we're busy with that.
As mentioned in a previous post, grocery stores are few and far
between in this region, and Armenian-Middle Eastern stores are even more
elusive. We were able to secure a few items in town – Bulgarian
